Each time a significant prize-giving event approaches, there’s always an outcry for introducing additional classifications to acknowledge overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request is the most urgent and important of all. The demand is this: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil within the realm of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.
Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly that have no home in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
- Another creative title missed out during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
- Just some logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent small games, but the art in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games globally and have been for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. You could fill five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
